CJTA offers two defensive driver improvement programs to the general public:  Alive At 25 and Defensive Driving Course-4. AA25 is a course that targets drivers between the ages of 15 and 25; DDC4 is open to drivers over the age of 25.  Both programs were developed by the National Safety Council and are used by some of the courts in San Juan County as diversion programs for first-time traffic offenders.

Alive At 25

Every year, drivers under the age of 25 are involved in more than six million collisions resulting in 14,000 fatalities. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for young adults between 15 and 21 years of age. Research studies confirm that young drivers do have knowledge of driving principles and laws. However, because of their inexperience and casual attitudes toward driving, they often use poor judgment or make bad decisions when behind the wheel. Through integrative learning techniques, the instructor helps students examine why their age group is at such high risk while driving. Participants form their own conclusions, which they are encouraged to analyze. Participants then determine whether this behavior has a negative effect on their driving and are instructed on how to take control and change this type of behavior. All participants are required to join in discussion of workbook exercises.

Course topics include:

  • Inexperience with driving
  • Impaired driving
  • Speeding
  • Peer pressure
  • Driving as a social activity
  • Awareness of the consequences of a bad driving attitude and risky behavior

Many young drivers attend this course as part of a sentence imposed on them by the San Juan County courts; however, the course is open to any interested person between 15 - 25 years of age. Tuition is $35.00 and is payable on the day of class. Classes are scheduled one Tuesday evening each month. 

DDC-4

The DDC-4 program is similar to AA25 but is geared for older drivers.  Course topics include:

  • Personal responsibility
  • Defensive driving
  • Hazard recognition
  • Drugs and driving
  • Driving environment
  • Collision avoidance
  • Self-control

Many people attend this course as part of a sentence imposed on them by the San Juan County courts; however, the course is open to any interested person.  Tuition is $35.00 for either course and is payable on the day of class. Classes are scheduled one evening each month. Early pre-registration is encouraged as classes fill up quickly.  Upon completion of a 4-hour course, students receive a Certificate of Completion.  For the latest course information you can contact the CJTA office at (505)566-3547 or by e-mail.

Please note:  DDC-4 does not meet the usual requirements for obtaining a driver's license or insurance reduction because it is only 4 hours in length.
